Market-Leading Providers of Networking and Outdoor Lighting Controls Join Forces to Deliver Smart Street Lights Solution to Utilities and Commercial Lighting Operator
Phoenix, AZ – September 9, 2013 – Today at the 2013 IES Street Light & Area Lighting Conference, Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE: SSNI), a leading networking platform and solutions provider for smart energy networks, announced a new partnership with Sunrise Technologies, a manufacturer of high-performance street lighting photocontrols for utilities. Silver Spring’s IPv6 networking platform will be integrated into Sunrise Technologies’ utility-grade BrownBetty® OpenGrid Light Control™ module. Sunrise Technologies is the world leader in outdoor lighting controls, serving more than 75 percent of the North American utility market.
“Silver Spring and Sunrise Technologies’ proven technology and extensive experience with the world’s largest utilities makes us natural partners to help utilities, municipalities and other street light operators control costs, improve efficiencies, and create safer cities as they modernize their public lighting systems,” said Sterling Hughes, Senior Director of Advanced Technologies, Silver Spring Networks. “The industry is definitively moving toward general purpose IP networks powering multiple applications and we are proud to extend our smart city platform with Sunrise Technologies.”
“Silver Spring Networks’ secure IP platform, proven at scale across 17 million Silver Spring-connected endpoints, enables our customers to rapidly deploy large street light networks across their service territory,” said Vance Spillman, Vice President and General Manager, Sunrise Technologies. “In addition to delivering these advanced control solutions to our Utility customers, we also look forward to extending these innovations to our commercial lighting customers.”
The Silver Spring-enabled Sunrise Technologies BrownBetty® OpenGrid Light Control™ provides network-based control in an easy to install external module, with features including on-off, dimming (energy reduction) functionality, luminaire energy measurement, remote lamp failure detection, and revenue grade light metering for LED and HID luminaires.
“The combination of Silver Spring Networks and Sunrise Technologies makes all the sense in the world,” said Rich Monsoor, utility lighting consultant, formerly General Manager with the Street and Area Lighting Department of Puget Sound Energy. “Smart street lights are definitely a part of the future – having the lights connected to a utility’s existing network is a cost effective way to optimize the technology and comply with current and future lighting ordinances. Both companies are known for their superior performance and I would be highly confident that the combined system will be world class.”
